 LOCAL NEWS | A 16-YEAR-OLD BOY NABBED IN GIYANI FOR POSSESSION OF SUSPECTED STOLEN PROPERTY, UNLICENSED FIREARM WITH AMMUNITION


The South African Police Service in Giyani, Mopani District has arrested a 16-year-old boy for possession of suspected stolen property, and unlicensed firearm with ammunition. 


The incident took place at Thomo village on Tuesday 18 June 2024 at about 23:45. 


It is reported that police were conducting patrol duties when they received information about a 16-year-old who was spotted walking along the street to his residence. 


The police followed up on the information that led them to a house at Thomo village, and upon arrival, they found the suspect with his mother inside the house.

The minor was asked about the firearm, but he denied the allegations that he had the firearm. The police then searched the house and found live ammunition and continued to search and discovered a bundle of cellphone airtimes, seven cellphones together with an unlicensed firearm that was concealed inside the roof of the house.


A Grade 08 learner could not provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the origin of the firearm, airtimes, and other items, but he was immediately apprehended for possession of an unlicensed firearm and stolen property. 


The minor was later released under parental supervision and further for the arrangements with the Probation Officer to be roped in. The minor will make his first appearance at Giyane Magistrate court in due course. 


Police investigations are continuing.
